In a bar where my band often performs , there’s 2 groups of regular guests I call good friends. Both always have at least 1 bottle of coconut rum on their table. Occupants of table number 1 preach the virtues of Malibu while the 2nd crew settle for nothing less than Bacardi. They’re continually having this friendly debate over which brand is best.
I personally keep a bottle of each in my bar bar at home , since I find each rum turns out better suited to differing purposes. Interchanging them in coconut rum drinks gives varying results.
This is why today I’m writing this article – to help you out & clarify when the best time is to use either Bacardi or Malibu. There are many more coconut rum brands but I’ll keep it between these 2 only now for the sake of this specific head to head. I’ve also added my top 12 coconut rum drinks , which I’ve split into 2 lists. Here’s the breakdown:

1. Coconut Rum Drinks : Malibu Vs. Bacardi

There’s one main difference between the two brands ; alcohol by volume content. Malibu is pretty light with only 21% alcohol /volume compared with Bacardi coming in at 35%. This results in Malibu having the much smoother taste.
If I’m imbibing it straight up , I choose Malibu. For me the added coconut flavours of Bacardi get pretty harsh on the throat if not combined in a tamer beverage. The feeling is not as nice as you get with a shot of another 40% spirit. It serves it’s purpose far better with various mixers or in a cocktail.
When consumed with a single mixer, I find Bacardi definitely the better option over Malibu. Both have excellent taste but I need at least a double shot of Malibu in these cases to produce the required strength. I like either of them best with pineapple juice, cranberry juice , or my personal favourite : a cheeky Smirnoff Ice.
It all becomes more interesting once we begin talking coconut rum drinks. Both our contenders display strengths , but the method I choose one over the other is simple. My ideal Malibu cocktails are mostly drinks that are already strong enough but need a touch of coconut. I will usually use Malibu in combinations already featuring more alcohol in the recipe.
Conversely , Bacardi coconut is my first choice if it’s the only booze in the drink. I also use it in situations requiring a stronger rum taste.

As you’ll notice in these examples , Malibu is my go-to mostly for taste rather than strength. This doesn’t mean they’re all weak concoctions so do be careful. Here’s my top 6 Malibu cocktails:

Malibu Cocktails – Recipe No 1 :
Irish Coconut Rum Cocktail
Ingredients
- 0.75 oz of Irish Cream
- 1.5 oz of Malibu Coconut Rum
- 0.5 oz of coconut cream
- 0.75 oz of cream
- Soda Water
Step-By-Step
- Combine all Ingredients except the soda water in a cocktail shaker with ice.
- Shake well.
- Pour with a Strainer in a Collins glass filled with rocks.
- Top With Soda Water.

- 1.5 oz of Malibu coconut rum
- 1.5 oz of peach schnapps
- 1.5 oz of pineapple juice
- 1.5 oz of orange juice
- Grenadine
Step-By-Step
- Pour the Malibu coconut rum and the peach schnapps into a collins glass filled with rocks.
- Gently Pour the Pineapple juice.
- Gently Pour the orange juice.
- Top With a splash of grenadine.
- Garnish with a Strawberry.
Malibu Cocktails – Recipe No 3 :
Monkey Shine Coconut Cocktail
Ingredients
- 2 oz of white rum
- 1 oz of Malibu Coconut Rum
- 1 oz of Pineapple juice
Step-By-Step
- Rim a coupe glass with cinnamon and sugar.
- Add Some ice cubes to chill the glass.
- Combine the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.
- Shake well.
- remove the Ice cubes from the glass.
- Pour the mix with a strainer into the glass.
Malibu Cocktails – Recipe No 4 :
Malibu Bay Breeze Cocktail
Ingredients
- 2 Oz Of Vodka
- 1.5 oz of Malibu coconut rum
- 2 oz of pineapple juice
- 2 oz of cranberry juice

- Combine All ingredients in a cocktail shaker with Ice.
- Shake well.
- Pour with a strainer in a chilled martini glass.
- Garnish With a Lemon Peel.
Malibu Cocktails – Recipe No 5 :
Rum Runner
Ingredients
- 1 oz of spiced rum
- 1 oz of white rum
- 1 oz of Malibu coconut rum
- 1 oz of amaretto
- 4 oz of pineapple juice
- Grenadine
Step-By-Step
- Combine all the liqueurs in a Double old fashioned glass with rocks.
- Pour the pineapple juice.
- Top with grenadine.
- Garnish with a orange wheel and a cherry.
Malibu Cocktails – Recipe No 6 :
Coconut Espresso Martini
Ingredients
- 1.5 Oz of Coconut Rum
- 0.75 Oz of coffee liqueur or cafe patron
- 1 Oz of Espresso coffee
- 1 dash of coconut syrup
Step-By-Step
- Chill a martini glass with ice.
- Combine All ingredients In a cocktail Shaker filled with a handful of ice.
- Give a very hard shake until you hear the tone change.
- Discard the chilled ice from the martini glass
- Pour gently the mix in the martini glass using a strainer.
- Garnish with the coffee beans
- Enjoy your Espresso Martini.

I recommend Bacardi for the following recipes. Some of these are very sweet and / or fruity , so stronger alcohol and rum flavour makes sense or they’ll only taste like juice and not much else. Here’s my Bacardi top 6:

Bacardi coconut rum Cocktails – Recipe No 1 :
Shark Bite
Ingredients
- 1.5 oz coconut rum
- 0.5 oz of blue curaçao
- 3 oz of pineapple juice
Step-By-Step
- Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.
- Shake Well.
- Pour with a strainer in a double old fashioned glass.
- Squeezed the juice of a Lime wedge, than drop it in.
Bacardi coconut rum Cocktails – Recipe No 2 :
Banana Mama
Ingredients
- 2 oz of dark rum
- 1 oz of coconut rum
- 1 oz of cream of coconut
- 1 oz of orange juice
- 1 oz of pineapple juice
- Half a banana
- 3 strawberries
Step-By-Step
- In a blender, combine all ingredients with a cup of crushed ice.
- Blend until you get a slushy consistency.
- Pour in a mason jar glass.
- Garnish with wheels of bananas.

Dark Rum Pina Colada
Ingredients
- 1.5 Oz of dark rum
- 1 Oz of coconut rum
- 3 Oz of coconut cream
- 5 Oz of Pinnaple juice
Step-By-Step
- In a blender, Combine all ingredients.
- Add 0.75 cup of crushed ice.
- Blend until you get a slushy consistency.
- Pour into a hurricane glass.
- Garnish with a pineapple slice.
Bacardi coconut rum Cocktails – Recipe No 4 :
Coconut Frozen Margarita
Ingredients
- 2 oz of silver tequila
- 1 oz of triple sec
- 1 oz of coconut rum
- 3 oz of lime juice
Step-By-Step
- Rim a coupe glass with lemon juice and salt.
- Combine all Ingredients into a blender with ice. Don’t put too much ice for now as you can balance at the end to adjust the consistency.
- Blend until the ice is crushed.
- Pour the blended mix gently in the glass.
- Garnish with a slice of lime and few flakes of sea salt.
- Enjoy your Frozen Margarita.

Coconut Rum Mojito
Ingredients
- 3 oz of coconut rum
- 1 oz of freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1 oz of simple syrup
- Soda Water
- 4 mint leaves
Step-By-Step
- Lightly mash the mint leaves in a cocktail shaker.
- Add the coconut rum, lime juice and simple syrup.
- Shake briefly.
- Pour into a highball glass filled with ice cubes.
- Top with Soda Water.
- Garnish with a lime wheel and a mint sprig.

Coconut Rum Lemonade
Ingredients
- 2 oz of coconut rum
- 1 oz of Cointreau Triple Sec
- 0.5 oz of amaretto
- 0.5 oz of freshly squeeze lemon juice
- 1 Smirnoff Ice

- Combine coconut rum, Cointreau triple sec, amaretto and lemon juice in a shaker filled with ice.
- Shake well.
- Pour with a strainer in a collins glass filled with crushed Ice.
- Top With Smirnoff Ice.

In Conclusion
Coconut rum can of course be combined in many more cocktails than detailed here. These are only my top 12 but I could have easily gotten to 50.
